We all know who Rammstein are. Everyone does. Even my mum knows two or three songs. And it’s not really hyperbole to say this was one of the most eagerly anticipated albums of the year.
So has it delivered? In short, eeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr……. not really, no.
Not to say it’s a disappointment. Gods no. It’s actually a pretty good album, it’s just that it’s probably not what most people wanted.
After how heavy and label pushing “LIFAD” was, and how insane, OTT, and vulgar Till’s solo album was, people were expecting something similar. Rammstein never do what’s expected of them
though, and will go out of their way to subvert the norms.
Which I guess is why some friends I’ve seen talking about it were unhappy with it. We had the first two singles, ‘DEUTSCHLAND’ and ‘RADIO’, and they were what we expected. Heavy, synthy,
outrageously done music video, tits everywhere. The rest of the album though, is a bit different.
Think “Herzeleid” and “Sehnsucht”, but more polished, more mature.
The trouble is, people only ever want more “Mutter” or “Reise, Reise”, but if a band never grows or changes, they stagnate, and people complain anyway. Personally, I liked this untitled album, but
then I like pretty much anything they do, a fair whack of “Rosenrot” aside.
Tracks like ‘AUSLÄNDER’ and ‘PUPPE’ stood out the most to me, and would probably be the best choices for people that only ever want the peak Rammstein days stuff. However another shout out
to closing track ‘HALLOMANN’ as well, for closing out the album in the best way Rammstein know; synth and pomp.
So, is the best they’ve done? No, but don’t listen to the detractors, it’s still a damn good album.
Besides, those that say it’s awful will still be paying upwards of £70 to see them live, so more fool them.
