I’ll admit I’d never heard King Voodoo before, but when I was given the chance to try something new I snapped it up, and I’m glad I did. It’s the first EP from the four piece, and if this is anything to go by, they’re in for a massive future.
Opener ‘Fever’ has a real sort of BLS/Corroded sound to it that I really dig. We’re talking MEGA groove here. It’s low down and dirty, it’s fucking brilliant. Shoutout to that pure filth of a solo as well.
Second track is ‘Creep’, which continues the groove feel but has a touch more of a sleaze edge to it. I’m not normally a fan of that sound, but this one works for me. Maybe it’s the message in the lyrics, a possible anthem for those of us struggling mentally and psychologically, maybe it’s that the groove is toe-tappingly good, who knows, but this is a definite repeater of a track.
I guess maybe you can this one the “obligatory ballad”, but even so ‘Hold On’ is still a good song. It absolutely is the full-on lighters in the air, waving side to side number, but again something about this one sticks out to me. It sounds similar to something I’ve heard in the past but can’t put my on what it is. Regardless it works, again. I’ve yet to have anything bad to say about this EP, which is a nice change.
Wow, the bass in the intro to ‘Plain To Me’ is great. It’s maybe a touch slow after the last song, but don’t let that put you off, cos when the song gets going properly it kicks some serious arse. It’s a great hard rock song, hiding another filthy solo in it. Another great song on a very stacked EP.
Closing things out is ‘TVC’, which stands for The Vegas Club, and it’s a great way to end things, cos it takes us out with a smile, on a high, head nodding and toe tapping all the way.
The whole EP was excellent though, and honestly you need this in your life if you love a bit of dirty rock. This band may well be relatively new, but they’re going places.
